Inspector General Of Police: Why We Are Still Keeping Evans

The Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Kpotun Idris, has disclosed that the sensitive nature of the suspected billionaire kidnapper, Chukwudi Onuamadike aka Evans, was responsible for his being kept in custody till date. Idris, who said that the suspect would soon be arraigned before the court, added that so many suspects were connected with the kidnap kingpin that needed to be arrested. He said that any attempt to take him to court in a hurry may jeopardise the investigation and arrest of others whom he promised must be brought to book no matter how highly placed. The Police high command has dismissed report of alleged disappearance or death of billionaire kidnapper, Chukwuduneme Onwuamadike, alias Evans, in its custody. EVANS It said contrary to the report, the kidnapper was not only firmly in its custody hale and hearty but also was very much assisting it in its ongoing investigation of alleged crimes he perpetrated while holding sway in his profession.  Reacting to the report following enquiry from newsmen, Weekend, in Abuja, Force Headquarters, through its spokesman, Jimoh Moshood, a Deputy Superintendent of Police, DSP, insisted that Evans never vanished from its custody nor died as being rumoured.  But Moshood described those peddling the rumour as mischief makers who were only out to tarnish the hard earned image of the Nigerian Police not only in crime fighting but also prevention as well as investigation.  Reminded that the story was in one of the conventional media platforms already, Mr Moshood responded:  “The peopl...

Police: Why kidnap kingpin Evans hasn't been arraigned in court

Two weeks after the arrest of  notorious kidnap kingpin, Chukwudimeme Onwuamadike, aka Evans, the police have yet to determine when the suspect will be arraigned in court. This is just as the Lagos State Police Command said it was not aware of any other media interview with Evans since he was paraded on June 11. The 36-year-old was apprehended on Saturday, June 10, 2017,however, the police said they were still taking an inventory of Evan’s criminal activities. The spokesperson for the Lagos State Police Command, ASP Olarinde Famous-Cole, on Monday, stated that he would be arraigned after investigations. He told Punch “After investigations, the Inspector-General of Police will give directive on what to do. “There are some other pieces of information about the suspect that must be known to us about things that happened years ago. Governor  Akinwunmi Ambode signed into law Life Imprisonment or death penalty for the offence of Kidnap and forceful extortion in Lagos State. With the on-going investigation on the activities of Evans and his gang, if he's eventually convicted, the law provides for death penalty for kidnappers whose victims die in their custody, and life imprisonment for the act of kidnapping. According to Ambode when he signed the law on January 5, 2017, “this law imposes a penalty of life imprisonment for kidnapping for ransom. The law stipulates that, where a victim dies in the course of kidnapping, the suspect is liable on conviction to death.
