Samsung Electronics is now the world’s largest maker of mobile phones, memory chips and most profitable tech firm, going by its record quarterly earnings released today, The figures show that the South Korean tech giant is on course to overtake Apple as the world’s most profitable tech. The firm said it's operating profit soared a forecast-beating 72.9 percent from the previous year to 14.07 trillion won ($12.6 billion), compared with consensus forecasts of $10.6 billion for US titan Apple, which is due to report next week. However, Greg Roh, an analyst at HMC Investment Securities, told AFP:  “Samsung has surpassed its rivals for now but Apple usually sees little fluctuation in its profits whereas Samsung’s profits fluctuate largely on memory chip prices.” Samsung has been trying to overcome an embarrassing recall last year of its flagship Galaxy Note 7 smartphone over exploding batteries, which cost it billions of dollars and dealt a blow to its reputation.

It's been about 10 years since the debut of the Roku streaming media player, and in that short time, the company has gone from a total unknown to now beating all the tech giants competing to be your TV streaming device of choice, a new report claims. The analysis comes from market research company eMarketer and was published on Wednesday, putting Roku ahead of Google (Chromecast), Amazon (Fire TV), and even Apple (Apple TV). According to the study, which is focused on U.S. residents using an internet connected TV at least once a month, Roku leads the pack with 38.9 million users, followed by Chromecast with 36.9 million users, Fire TV with 35.8 million users, and Apple TV with 21.3 million users. Apple has gotten itself into a bit of a pickle. U.S. District Court Judge William Conley pounded the gavel on Monday ordering Apple to pay $506 million to the Wisconsin Alumni Research Foundation (WARF). This court order adds $272 million to the $234 million amount Apple already owed WARF from a separate verdict in late 2015. And so the questions roll in. What is WARF and what on earth did Apple do to owe it so much money? In short, WARF is a patent licensing part of the University of Wisconsin. WARF's vision is to "enable University of Wisconsin–Madison research to solve the world’s problems," which it did when creating computer processing chips used in iPhones. The problem is that Apple never legally obtained the rights to those chips. And now Apple is left with the task of writing a hefty check on account of patent infringement. Apple just released the first public beta for High Sierra, the next version of MacOS. The update brings enhancements to many of Apple's native apps, like Photos and Mail, as well as under-the-hood performance improvements to graphics and video encoding. If you want to take it for a spin, you can sign up for Apple's beta program and download it right now. As with any beta release, the update is bound to have bugs, so Apple recommends you only install beta software on a secondary device. It's also a good idea to make sure you have a current backup, just in case something goes wrong. But, if you're okay with the risk, there's a lot to look forward to in the High Sierra update, even if it's more of a refresh of last year's Sierra update. Apple has released the first Public beta of iOS 11 to users. Unlike the Developer beta, the Public beta does not require a developer account and anyone with an Apple ID can download it. To download the update, head over to beta.apple.com/profile to download the configuration profile for your device. Once you install that, you will be asked to restart your iOS device. After the device restarts, head over to Settings > General > Software Update and you will see the public beta as an update just as you would any other iOS update. We installed the update on one of our devices and noticed some minor bugs and glitches in the interface, which makes it perfectly clear that it is nowhere near ready to install on your primary device. The performance is snappy but we did install the update on a speedy iPhone 7 and it's likely the performance won't be as good on older devices. So, the old adage still stands.
