FRSC raises `Cobra Squad’

Image
The Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) on Friday inaugurated a special patrol team codenamed “Cobra Squad’ in the FCT, preparatory to the July 1 commencement of mental test on recalcitrant traffic law violators. The move came a day before the planned nationwide enforcement of mental stability/psychological test on traffic offenders by the commission. The test would focus on life threatening violations, such as use of phone while driving, route violation, traffic light violation, dangerous driving and overloading. The Corps Marshal of the FRSC, Dr Boboye Oyeyemi, inaugurated the squad, along with 10 equipped patrol motorcycles, five vans and an ambulance, dedicated to the exercise in the FCT. He used the occasion to reiterate his warning against assault of FRSC personnel in the country, stressing that the commission would press for maximum punishment of culprits. Oyeyemi said he would personally lead the FCT squad, adding that similar teams and logistics would be deployed at the zona

Facebook could now be fined $57m over hate speech

Image
For some time, the European country flagged the possibility it could impose a heavy fine on Facebook, Twitter and other social networks for allowing fake news and hate messages to proliferate.  On Friday, German lawmakers passed the Network Enforcement Act, commonly nicknamed as the "Facebook law", under which social media companies could face a fine of up to €50m (£43m; $57m) for failing to crack down on hate speech, criminal material and fake news.  The new law requires Facebook & co. to remove "obviously illegal" content within 24 hours after receiving notification or complaint. They also have to block other offensive content within seven days. The initial fine is up to €5m, which could rise to €50m.  New tools Justice Minister Heiko Maas, a strong supporter of the bill, said:  “Freedom of expression ends where criminal law begins." “Experience has shown that, without political pressure, the large platform operators will not fulfill their obligations, an

Japan wants to put a man on the moon before China does

Image
Japan's space agency JAXA has submitted an ambitious proposal to the country's Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology: it wants to fly and put a man on the moon by 2030. The agency is either directly challenging China's plans to do the same thing  by 2036   or is planning to work with China to reach their identical goals at the same time. We offer the latter as a possibility, no matter how small, because a JAXA spokesperson told   CNN   that the plan is to be part of a multinational manned lunar probe. A Japan-only mission would be a bit too expensive for the agency. That unnamed multinational mission would apparently start preparations by 2025 -- take note that Japan doesn't have a guaranteed seat yet, but it's hoping to get one by contributing to the project. JAXA will reveal more details about its space exploration dreams at Japan's International Space Exploration Forum in March 2018. We're guessing it has other big missions on the

MacOS High Sierra Public Beta Now Available. Here's how to get it.

Image
Apple just released the first public beta for High Sierra, the next version of MacOS. The update brings enhancements to many of Apple's native apps, like Photos and Mail, as well as under-the-hood performance improvements to graphics and video encoding. If you want to take it for a spin, you can sign up for Apple's beta program and download it right now. As with any beta release, the update is bound to have bugs, so Apple recommends you only install beta software on a secondary device. It's also a good idea to make sure you have a current backup, just in case something goes wrong. But, if you're okay with the risk, there's a lot to look forward to in the High Sierra update, even if it's more of a refresh of last year's Sierra update. Apple has made significant improvements to the Photos app, with a revamped user interface and new editing tools; Safari, which can now prevent auto-play videos; and Mail, which now comes with faster search. There's also App

EPIC: Wonder Woman just blew past Batman, Superman and Suicide Squad at the box office

Image
We can now safely surmise that  Wonder Woman  has exceeded both  Batman v Superman and  Suicide Squad  at the domestic (North American) box office as of Thursday, making it the biggest hit Warner Bros. has produced from its DC stable, according to estimates provided by ComScore. Wonder Woman   became WB/DC's top grosser in just   four weeks   of release, beating out the entire 14-week run of   Suicide Squad   earlier this week, then zooming past   Batman v Superman   just before the weekend. All the more estimable when you realize that Wonder Woman's opening weekend ($103 million) was significantly lower — meaning its   high quality and great word-of-mouth have given it powerful legs. The breakdown: Wonder Woman  (4 weeks): $325,083,830 (through Tuesday), earning more than $3 million daily on average this week, for an estimated $331 million to $332 million Batman v Superman  (12 weeks): $330 million Suicide Squad  (14 weeks): $325 million Man of Steel  (14 weeks): $291 million

Producer Asahd Khaled cried at the sight of Justin Bieber

Image
When DJ Khaled's son met Justin Bieber ... tears were shed.  TMZ has obtained video of Justin getting an audience with Khaled's beloved baby boy, Asahd.  The meeting went down while Asahd's pop and JB were shooting their "I'm the One" music video, and let's just say it didn't go too well. Asahd -- who famously never cries or fusses in public -- gave Justin the once-over, and then came the bawling.  The Biebs tried his best to soothe the kid ... NOT by singing, "Baby," but that would've been cool.  Source: TMZ

Scientists made an AI that can read minds

Image
Whether it's using AI to help organize a Lego collection or relying on an algorithm to protect our cities, deep learning neural networks seemingly become more impressive and complex each day. Now, however, some scientists are pushing the capabilities of these algorithms to a whole new level - they're trying to use them to read minds. By reverse-engineering signals sent by the brain, researchers at Carnegie Mellon University have been working on an AI that can read complex thoughts simply by looking at brain scans. Using data collected from a functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) machine, the CMU scientists feed that data into their machine learning algorithms, which then locate the building blocks that the brain uses to create complex thoughts. Impressively, the study showed that the team were able to demonstrate where and how the brain was being triggered while processing 240 complex events, covering everything from individuals to places and even various physical action

Critics welcome Spider-Man homecoming with open arms and a whole lot of praise

Image
Spider-Man is back and he's keeping things fresh as hell. The MCU's latest installment in the classic superhero franchise,  Spider-Man: Homecoming,  departs from the traditional narrative in an unexpected way, brilliantly distinguishing itself from the crowd. Take a look at what some other critics are saying about the unique portrayal of Parker's life: Jim Vejvoda,  IGN : If you weren’t already sold on him after Civil War, his turn in  Homecoming  proves that Tom Holland is the definitive big screen Spider-Man. His exuberance, intelligence, and good-natured manner perfectly captures Peter Parker’s youthfulness, earnestness and moral center. Peter screws up a lot, but he’s a good kid who knows when he has to set things right and Holland sells all of that. He owns every scene he’s in, never getting blown off the screen by his co-stars, which include such formidable personalities as Robert Downey Jr. and Michael Keaton. John DeFore,  The Hollywood Reporter : Where Garfield'
